London Travel Advice

London is a big and expensive city. Here's some tips to help you get the most out staying in London.

Getting Around

The symposium is being held at Torrington Place, London WC1E 7JE. The closest tube stations are Warren Street, Euston Square, Goodge Street and Russell Square. Euston rail station is a short walk away.

London has several airports for those travelling in by plane. Heathrow and Gatwick are the most accessible internationally. Luton, Stansted and Southend are all further away but still usable. Birmingham airport can sometimes offer cheap alternatives whilst still being accessible by train to central London.

London has many major train stations, all of which are connected to the tube network. London Underground is the easiest way to get about whilst in the city, being faster than either car or bus, and significantly cheaper than taxis. 24 hour tube access is available on weekends on the main lines. The use of public transport in London is vastly improved by the possession of a wireless payment card, or by getting an Oyster travel card pre-loaded with cash.

Uber and Lyft are widely used in London, and are far cheaper than regular taxis. For short distances consider walking - London is dense so often walking is quick and lets you see more of the city. Take the side streets to soak in some atmosphere (and avoid the more polluted atmosphere of the main roads).

Google Maps and Citymapper apps help tremendously with navigating London and providing public transport routes.

Accommodation

London is an expensive city for hotels and booking in advance is highly recommended. Generally cheaper deals are found by staying outside the centre and getting the tube in each day, though obviously this comes at a cost to convenience.

Some useful resources for finding the best deals:

 - Booking.com offers extensive listings of hotels, hostels and apartment rentals, and often allows booking with free cancellation
 - TravelLodge, Premier Inn and Holiday Inn are all reliable hotel chains with affordable rates and various establishments across the city
 - AirBnB allows renting out of rooms for very good rates, though the quality can vary drastically.
 - UniversityRooms allows you to rent out vacant student accommodation. Usually very basic, but affordable.
